When a Challenge Arose, BEAM Delivered Swift Solutions
When a Challenge Arose, BEAM Delivered Swift Solutions
By Joel Burstein, CEO, BEAM Collaborative
The devastating storm on April 29 plunged hundreds of thousands into darkness across
Allegheny and Beaver counties. As Duquesne Light Company (DLC) launched its emergency
response, mobilizing crews and contractors to restore power, another urgent mission unfolded
— one that BEAM Collaborative was built to lead.
DLC faced an immediate challenge: a critical shortage of hotel rooms and vendors capable of
supporting over 600 utility workers arriving from across the country. They immediately started
establishing a base camp for the workers, but quickly realized they needed help locating
resources. That’s when BEAM stepped in, delivering rapid solutions with local expertise.
Leveraging the BEAM Procurement Collaborative, we activated our trusted network of local
vendors at a moment’s notice. We stepped up to connect DLC’s procurement team with the right
partners when it mattered most. We secured dependable, high-quality food services for the DLC
base camp through Eat’n Park Hospitality Group and ensured consistent linen and towel
management with Affordable Linens. Every solution was local; every dollar stayed within our
region.
Darcie Orr of DLC shared her gratitude with us this week: “I just really wanted to thank you for
taking my call last week, your responsiveness, and for connecting me with one of ‘the helpers,’
as Mr. Rogers would say!” Darcie’s words highlight the importance of BEAM’s collaborative
engagement in Pittsburgh.
These businesses are more than just local vendors — they are part of a resilient, trusted
network that BEAM has built, ready to deliver solutions whenever speed, trust, and reliability are
non-negotiable.
This is precisely why BEAM exists.
BEAM’s strategy helps keep dollars in the local economy, builds resilience, and creates
opportunities where they’re needed most. In moments of need — and in times of growth —
BEAM stands ready to bridge the gap between institutions and small businesses. That’s how a
true ecosystem thrives.
While DLC raced to restore power in the area, BEAM showcased the unmatched value of local
trust and the power of an organization purpose-built for rapid solutions.
This is real collaboration.
This is BEAM.
